Mendeley Reference Manager: Step-by-Step User Guide

For Students and Faculty

Option A: Add Manually

 

1. Open Mendeley Desktop

2. Click “+ Add New”“Add Entry Manually”

3. Choose source type (e.g., Journal Article, Book, Website)

4. Enter citation details: author, title, year, publisher, etc.

5. Click Save

TIP: Add a DOI and click “Lookup” to auto-fill data

Option B: Import from Library Databases

1. In a database (e.g., JSTOR, EBSCO, ScienceDirect):

  • Run a search
  • Select articles
  • Click Export Citation
  • Choose RIS or BibTeX format
  • Save the file to your computer

2. In Mendeley:

  • Click Add > Import RIS or BibTeX
  • Select the saved file
  • References will appear in your Library

Option C: Add PDFs (Drag & Drop)

  1. Download PDFs to your computer
  2. Open Mendeley Library
  3. Drag and drop the PDF file into the Library area
  4. Mendeley will extract the reference data
  5. Double-check and edit if needed (sometimes fields are missing)

Option D: Use the Web Importer

  1. Find a paper online (e.g., on PubMed, Google Scholar)
  2. Click the Mendeley Web Importer icon in your browser
  3. A panel will pop up – choose the article(s)
  4. Click Add to Library
  5. Sync your Library in Mendeley Desktop to view

TIP: Always check imported references for accuracy.

Option E: Search in Mendeley

  1. Open: https://www.mendeley.com/search/
  2. Type keywords or article titles
  3. Click Save to add to your Library
