"We need to study, teach, and practice tolerance – and to instill it in our children, both through education and our own example." His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The Year of Tolerance started in high gear with the historic visit to the UAE by Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church and Dr Ahmed Al Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al Azhar.

The two leaders attended the Global Conference of Human Fraternity and launched the Human Fraternity Document, a guide for promoting tolerance and mutual respect in the world.

Pope Francis concluded his trip to the UAE on the 5th of February in Abu Dhabi with an open-air Mass at the Zayed Sports City Stadium, and attended by an estimated 150,000 people.

To commemorate this historic event, a new church and mosque are to be built in Abu Dhabi and named the Church of Saint Francis and the Mosque of Grand Imam Ahmad Al Tayeb. Pope Francis, Dr. Al Tayeb and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, signed the foundation stones.
