Mendeley Reference Manager: Step-by-Step User Guide

For Students and Faculty

A. Open Mendeley Cite in Word

  • Go to the References tab
  • Click Mendeley Cite
  • Sign in if prompted

B. Choose Your Citation Style

  • Click Citation Settings
  • Choose APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.
  • Search for more styles if needed

C. Insert In-Text Citations

  1. Place your cursor where the citation should go
  2. In the sidebar, search/select the reference
  3. Click Insert

TIP: To add multiple citations, tick several sources and click Insert

D. Edit a Citation

  • Click the citation
  • Add page numbers or prefixes (e.g., “see also”)
  • Suppress author name if needed (common in APA for narrative citations)

E. Insert a Bibliography

  1. Place your cursor where the list should appear
  2. In the Mendeley Cite toolbar, click More Options > Insert Bibliography
  3. The list is auto-formatted in your chosen style
  4. Use Word formatting tools to adjust spacing or font
